What’s Going on in Burns Lake?

I’m sure Burns Lake is a nice place.  I don’t think I’ve ever been there, unless it happened when I was very young.  It is a small town of about 2,000 people, several hours from anywhere.  It’s the sort of place a person might go to load up on moose and fish.  It happens to hold the record for the most sunshine in a month by any B.C. town, set in 1982. Anyway, my concern with the town is their lopsided number of lottery wins.  The provincial lottery corporation runs a 50/50 draw that draws four times a day, and often smaller towns like Powell River and Kamloops (which is not exactly tiny at 75,000) win more than their share, but statistically the king is Burns Lake.

At 2,000 people, Burns Lake has about 1/2,000 of the population of B.C., or about 0.05%.  Logic would suggest that one draw in about every 2,000 should be won there.  That amounts to once about every 18 months.  Today is the end of June, and a fine time to tally up the damage.  Since the beginning of 2015 – 18 months to the day – they have won the 50/50 a whopping 98 times, including 13 times in June, almost 11% of all the draws or around 220 times more than their fair share based on population.  The average win this month was almost $1600 and the Burns Lake haul was $20,723.50.  In the 18 months in question, over $150,000 has been won there on the 50/50.  Once in January it was won three draws in a row at the Burns Lake Husky station, netting $5,000 in 19 hours.  Considering these tickets are sold at over 4,000 locations across the province, a three draw winning streak at one gas station is nearly impossible.

To win a dollar on the 50/50, theoretically you must spend two dollars.  So either the 2,000 people have spent $300,000 on it in the last year and a half, or they are experiencing an elongated period of luck.  My guess would be that most of the winning has been done by a small number of people who faithfully spend a large sum every day.  Even if a person was spending $100 each morning on his way to work and was winning a small number of draws, it may be paying off.  That person would be coming out ahead even if he only won once every two weeks.  In June the town averaged almost $700 in winnings each day, including days they didn’t win any draws.

I was tempted to phone a gas station or two from Burns Lake before I wrote this, see if they have any locals spending wildly or if it’s a fad in town that lots of people participate in, but I decided not to.  I think I’m worried I will mess up their winning streak by snooping around.

  1. i buy tickets now and then for the 50/50 and have also been looking into how frequent burns lake husky seems to win, they won again today so i wanted to look into this or see if anyone else like me was curious as to all the wins in burns lake specifically the husky station would love it if someone finds out whats really going on,great work with all of the research you really have done your homework on the statistics

    1. Thanks! Their winning streak cooled off quite a bit in July, but it was just stupid in June. My guess is that someone is spending $10 per draw every day, which buys them 15 tickets, meaning they win back 2/3 of their money instead of 1/2. That would cost $1200 a month, but you’d only need to win once to get that all back. Never mind 98 times in 18 months! Did you check out January 14 -15? That was when Burns Lake Husky won three draws in a row.

      1. So far in 2017 Burns Lake has won the 50/50 13 times including the 6 & 9 pm draws on the 20th.They also won 2 Saturday draws this April.
Also, Kamloops(Home of BCLC) at various locations has won quite a few 50/50’s as well.

        1. Yes, after I wrote the first post about it, I realized I would have to check in once in a while and update how they’re doing. Kamloops wins quite a bit, too, but they have around 30 times the population and they sure don’t win 30 times more than Burns Lake.
I would be interested to know if it’s the same people over and over or if the town has a 50/50 problem. If I ever go there, I’m heading straight for the Husky station to buy some tickets!

  2. Yes…its about time for an inquest..its ridiculous..as i speak yesterday Burns Lake..won again ..on May 13.

The odds are not making sense at all…ask BC!
My friends from here in Vancouver to Kelowna are all discussing this ..each week..forvMontgs on end .and we would like more info from BCLC.

    1. The people up there must be spending a fortune on it. But they win so much it might be someone’s full time job. I’m glad other people see this too. Thanks for reading and commenting!

  3. I emailed the bc lottery corp in March this year with my complaint over the unfair number of bclc50/50 wins for the burns lake husky. I was basically told the computer in Kamloops draws at random. My reply is that this is a BIG province with thousands of bclc ticket machines throughout… hmmm. I’d like to take a trip up there and stay for a month and just buy the 50/50 lottery tickets while I’m there. It’ll pay forcmy trip and them some!

    1. The only thing that makes sense is if someone, or a little group of people, are spending ten bucks every draw. It would cost about $1200 a month, but you’d make that back with almost any win. And God knows, they rarely stop at one win! I believe the BCLC that nothing dishonest is going on. The people doing all the winning would go unnoticed if they lived in Vancouver. They only stick out because they live in the bush.

  4. It’s the luck of the draw. What else is there to do here. Why don’t you find out why all the millions are drawn in Ontario and Quebec. Now that’s the place to buy tickets.

    1. The winnings in Ontario and Quebec make perfect sense. Those provinces have a combined population of about 22 million, of the 36 million Canadians. So they should win about 11 of every 18 jackpots, which seems like what happens. Burns Lake has only 0.05% of BC’s population, yet they win, in a good month, sometimes 10% of the money. Overall that would be the equivalent of Niagra-On-The-Lake, Ontario (or closer to home, Salmon Arm, BC) winning 10% of the 649 jackpots.
Now when you say “nothing else to do here,” are you saying you are from Burns Lake? If so, I hope you guys keep winning, I find it pretty intriguing. I know a few people have got upset about it, but that’s just sour grapes.

  5. I recently read Carole James husband draws a salary from the Burns Lake Band which is a short distance from Burns Lake Husky.

  6. It’s a crock of sh** and I’m telling ya. IF I find out there is funny business going on the people responsible will be hunted down and skinned alive!

    1. How long have you been spending this much, and where do you live? I won it a few times, but oddly only when I have spent exactly $1. I hope your investment starts paying you back, that’s outrageous.

    2. They claim to have looked into it and found it to be legit. You can obtain the records of their investigation from the BCLC in the form of a Freedom of Information request. I considered it, but never went through with it.

  7. Wonder what the heck is going on.Does someone know the exact to purchase or what.I noticed this a while back and it’s still happening. There is no way that this can be legit. The odds are huge for this to be happening almost daily

    1. Like I say, the lottery corp actually did an investigation into this and found they win because they’re buying an insane amount of tickets.

  8. I’ve emailed Bclc and whoever is winning in Burns Lake is spending 6 to 8 % on each draw. So on a $1500 prize there was $3000 spent in the Province. 8 % of $3000 would be $240 on each draw.

    1. Ever since that story ran, 6 weeks ago?, Burns Lake has hardly won anything. Yes, they are spending a small fortune every day on the 50/50. It’s a local fad. It certainly missed Abbotsford, as I’ve bought tickets here from people who had literally never sold one before.

    1. Is the pipeline going through there? I’m not up to speed with its route. Maybe the pipeline guys will start winning.
